Zone Poker

Zone Poker is a cash game for those of us with ADHD. After being dealt your hole cards, as soon as you hit Fold Now you are moved to another table and dealt another hand. It doesn’t matter when you fold, it can be pre-flop, or any other time during the hand, and this will happen.

If you hit Check/Fold, as soon as someone bets, the same will happen. If nobody bets, the hand will continue until you fold or the hand is completed, whichever comes first.

Zone poker allows players to see far more hands than they would in a regular cash game. Because of this, it’s also a lot more fun – and potentially more profitable for good players. However, if you’re a bad player, you’ll just lose your money faster.

People who are new to Zone Poker often think the best strategy is to get extremely tight and wait for monster starting hands, folding pre-flop a lot more often. The problem with this strategy is that you will be on the blind more often too, and if you aren’t seeing many flops it’s harder to beat the rake – let alone make a profit.

Our suggestion for winning at Zone Poker is to open up your range and see lots of cheap flops (pre-flop opens of 3x or less) with starting hands that offer big potential. Hands like 6, 8 suited, when they hit, are more likely to win you a big pot in Zone Poker than in a regular cash game.

The reason for this is that the style of Zone Poker encourages both, disbelief and bad play. People get into a mode of playing fast, fast, fast, which means they’re often spending less time thinking about the correct play. Decisions tend to be more emotional, and many players are steaming from previous hands.

If you hit post-flop and feel strongly about your hand, don’t be shy about over-betting. Opponents tend to overvalue their hands in Zone Poker, plus overbets also tend to encourage disbelief (if you actually had a big hand why would you bet so big?). In many cases, if your opponent is willing to call a bet of 1/2 the pot, they’ll also be willing to call a full pot sized bet – so get paid when you have a monster. And if they weren’t willing to call to your full-pot sized bet, they wouldn’t have called a 1/2 pot sized bet either. So, you have to go for it when you make your big hands. You’ll generally get paid off more often than you would in a regular cash game, so you should be using the stye of the game to your benefit.

Another important tip for playing Zone Poker is to keep your wits about you. Don’t let the fast pace of the game disrupt your rational thinking. Don’t let previous hands affect your decision making now. If you do a better job of this than your opponents, you already have an edge in the game.

The Bovada poker room offers all of the typical single table (2, 6 and 9 handed) and multi table sit-n-go tournaments. They have a wide variety of buy-ins and blind structures, and the most popular SNG’s are busy all day & night, making it easy to find a game.

Beginner Tournaments: Beginner tournaments are 6 handed, have buy-ins that range from $4.40 to $35, and pay out the top 3 players. The difference here versus a typical 6 handed SNG is that 3 places are paid instead of 2. For example, a $4 + $.40 ($4.40) pays $12 for first, $7.20 for second, and $4.80 for third. So if you make 3rd place you will get your money back plus $.40, but you’re really shooting for first or second place.

Players start with 1500 chips and blind levels are 10 minutes each. Blinds are 10/20, 15/30, 25/50, 50/100, 75/150, 100/200, 150/300 + 30 ante, 200/400 + 40 ante, 250/500 + 50 ante, and so forth.

Bovada also offers a $64 + 6 turbo beginners tournament. These are also 6 handed and pay the top three, but they have 5 minute blind levels.

Double-Up SNG’s: Bovada Poker also offers a lot of double-up sit-n-go tournaments in 6 handed format. For example, a $10 double-up will have 6 players, and the top three make the money – each taking a $20 prize.

Double-ups are very popular on the site, which means that players of all skill levels are playing these. For smart, analytical types of players, this is an easy game to beat in the long-term.

There is a clear difference in the skill level of the average player at the $5 level from the $10 level, but not as significant as it is between the $10 and $20 levels. At the $5 level you will see a lot of novice players, along with nighttime drunks – mixed with some players who are actually ok- albeit very ABC players. At the $10 level you will see fewer of the novices & drunks, replaced mostly by more ABC players. As mentioned, the $20 level brings a distinct difference in the average skill levels – with most players having a much better understanding of the strategy of this game style. This can be good or bad, depending on how well you adjust.

At or above the $20 level, these games become a war of attrition. Nearly every one of these double-ups get into very high blinds relative to stack sizes, with 4, 5, or even all 6 players vying for the top 3 spots. When this happens, any random hand could be the end of it. For example, there are only 9,000 chips on the table. With four players left, the average stack is 2,250. With five players, the average stack is 1,800. And of course with 6 player, the average stack is the same as each player started with, just 1500 chips. So, when the blinds are 200/400, even at a 4 handed table, the average stack is just 5.6 big blinds. When you include the small blind and 4 antes of 40, the pot is 760 before anyone looks at their cards.

Yes, there is a lot of luck that comes into play at this point, but smart position play, well-timed patience, and your table reputation are all critical elements at this stage.

In these tournaments, winning small pots early in the game when the blinds are small don’t matter a whole lot. Winning a pot of 60 chips won’t do you much good when the blinds are 200/400 or higher, so there are only two reasons to play early hands – to win BIG pots, and to develop your table rep. What this means is, you should be folding more hands post-flop than you might in a different type of tournament, and certainly more than you would in a cash game. It means you should be chasing your draws less often – unless the math is well on your side, and if your made hand will translate into a sizable winning pot. If you’re playing against a guy who bluffs a lot or overbets, you should be more inclined to play against him, but more inclined to fold against a tighter player who is less likely to pay you off. Remember, those little pot wins won’t help you much later, so don’t blow off 1/3rd of your stack chasing against the wrong opponents and in the wrong situations. Hold onto your chips for when you can do more damage later in the tournament.
